Famous Statue at Wat Phra Yai
Samui’s landscape at Bang Rak Beach is dominated by a twelve meter tall golden Buddha statue at the top of a small island Koh Farn. The temple islet is an important place of worship and merit making, Samui’s most famous landmark and a popular sightseeing attraction. A causeway connects the islet to the beach of Bang Rak.
Big Buddha is situated on a platform which is reached by a wide staircase flanked with balustrades in the in traditional form of two mythical seven-headed naga snakes. From the platform visitors also enjoy magnificent views across Bang Rak Bay.
The temple at the base of Big Buddha, Wat Phra Yai, is very picturesque with many more ornate religious images and shrines. A market outside the temple sells souvenirs, art, food and drink to visitors who arrive in groups or individually from the resorts all over the island.
